I guess from copyrighting a number of things (beyond just putting
"Copyright Cozzi" on something, but actually registering the copyright, you
have to become aware that in order to enforce you copyright, you sometimes
have to prove access. If I put "copyright Cozzi" on my handout, give it to
COMMON to reproduce, and in turn, give a copy of it to an attendee, there
is a paper path that can be followed. If I simply stick it on the Internet,
the paper path is lost.

While there are several presentations for which I don't mind who downloads
them, I do get paid to speak at user groups, and commercially, outside of
COMMON. There have been times when people have taken sessions, mine and
others, from a COMON conference and gone and presented them as their own
materials. While I'm sure no one on this list has ever or would ever do
something like that, there are some that would. If there were not, we would
NOT need to have a copyright law.
