The best way to handle this is use the FIXDECERR routine published in the Midrange Computing and fix the dde in the external file. Make sure to clear the format somewhere in your program to initialize the fields. S/36 is very understanding, AS/400 is very picky on the data format. You can download all the source code(cmd,cl,and rpg) from the web at http://www.midrangecomputing.com/mc/prog/92/ Look under January 1992 for "stamp out decimal data error".
