 Today IBM is announcing AS/400e-series which introduces new function 
 and technology while continuing to preserve your customers investment

                    NEW FAMILY OF PROCESSORS 

 IBM is announcing the new AS/400e series ... the net generation. Eight 
 high performance e-servers and e-systems, network enabled technology 
 along with new operating system software and expanded service and 
 support, deliver advantages to help leverage the benefits of e-business. 
 The wide range of the AS/400e series provides excellent scalability and 
 growth options. 


 AS/400e-systems 

 The AS/400e systems are intended for customers where the majority of 
 applications are multi-user commercial, distributed commercial or 
 business solutions that require an integrated database, transaction 
 processing, or System/3X migration.  The AS/400e system has four new 
 models spanning thirteen different processor features.

 NOTE: Relative system performance measurements (CPW values) are based 
 on AS/400 environment, commercial processing workload (CPW). The CPW 
 workload is representative of commercial applications, particularly 
 those that do significant database processing in conjunction with 
 journaling and commitment control. The CPW workload is measured on 
 maximum configurations. CPW values may not be realized in all 
 environments. 

 AS/400e servers 

 The AS/400e servers are designed for environments which consist 
 primarily  of a network of workstations and the application base is 
 client-centric or cooperative, or for high volume communications routing 
 or for application development support of both host-centric and 
 cooperative applications. 

 A new enhanced AS/400e server Model 150 with double the memory capacity 
 offers small businesses a new low-cost, high performance, e-business 
 computing solution. 

 The AS/400e server has four new models spanning 11 different processor 
 features.

 NEW 8-WAY AND 12-WAY PROCESSORS 

 AS/400e Model 650 with feature 2243 is the high-end offering that is 
 more than 4.6 times the performance of todays most powerful AS/400 
 Advanced system. A new high-end design provides a high function, 
 commercially robust package that supports 8-way and 12-way symmetric 
 multiprocessors, very large memory (up to 20GB of main storage) and 
 996GB of disk storage. 

 The AS/400e Model S40 also quadruples the performance of the most 
 powerful AS/400 Advanced Server (Model 53S). 


 EXPANDED MEMORY AND DASD CAPACITIES 

 The new AS/400e series models have expanded the amount of memory and 
 disk storage that is available to users. On the high end models the 
 memory capacity is now 20GB of main storage and disk capacity has grown 
 to 996GB. 

 CUSTOM APPLICATION SERVERS 

 IBM and ISVs J.D.Edwards World Solutions Company, SAP AG, and System 
 Software Associates, Inc. (SSA) introduce packaged solutions of ISV 
 preloaded software and customized AS/400s. IBM intends to expand this 
 approach with other ISVs and deliver additional packaged solutions. 



               OS/400 VERSION 4 RELEASE 1 

 AS/400 V4R1 continues to buid on state-of-the-art, 64bit RISC technology 
 protecting the investment of customers and Business Partners with over 
 28,000 commercial applications worldwide. New and enhanced Internet and 
 intranet features, available with V4R1 make it easier to create 
 productive, collaborative computing environments. 

 INTEGRATED NETWORK ENABLED TECHNOLOGY 

 AS/400 V4R1 integrated with network technology provides the ability to 
 extend the reach and value of applications across the Internet and 
 intranet. IBM is extending the network computing capabilities of OS/400 
 V4R1 by adding Internet Connection Server and Net.Data enhancements to 
 the system. 

 INTERNET CONNECTION SERVER FOR AS/400 

 Provides Web server capability that enables a user to have multiple 
 occurances of the Web server. A Web browser based administrator and 
 configuration interface allows the system administrator to use a 
 standard Web browser to configure and control the Web server. 

 NET.DATA 

 Net.Data builds on the capabilities announced with Version 3 making it 
 easier to connect data to the Web. Highlights include RPG and Cobol 
 support along with offering Web registry and flat file support. Net.Data 
 builds on strong data base access, report and creation abilities of the 
 initial version while the improvements make it easier to create Web 
 pages. 

 PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS 

 Significant performance improvements are available to existing customers 
 who install V4R1 on their current AS/400 systems. 

 V4R1 performance compared to V3R7: 
    - Up to 5% for the 400, 510, 40S, and 50S models 
    - Up to 15% for the 530 and 53S Uni and 2-Way systems 
    - Up to 30% for the 530 and 53S 4-Way systems 

 FASTER APPLICATION DEPLOYMENT 

 Version 4 announcements further enhance the ability to develop and 
 deploy state-of-the-art applications on the AS/400e systems. 
    - a simplified Win 95 prepackaged application that includes Lotus 
      Mail 4.5 on Internet 1.0 expands e-mail for your Internet and 
      intranet. 
    - e-business application enablement is enhanced with Net.Data, 
      Domino.Action and Domino.Merchant. 
    - OS/2 Warp Server for AS/400 enhances the integrated PC Server 
      offering 
    - V4R1 integrated with application tools such as Lotus, Showcase, 
      MAGIC, and others, further enhance the deployment of AS/400 
      applications. 

                            SOFTWARE 

 IBM INTERNET CONNECTION SECURE SERVER FOR AS/400 

 The Internet Connection Secure Server for AS/400 provides the security 
 needed to send proprietary or confidential information over the 
 Internet or corporate intranets. This enables secure transactions 
 including electronic commerce to be performed. 

 FIREWALL FOR AS/400 

 A firewall is a blockade between a secure, internal, private network 
 and other (non-secure) networks such as the Internet. Most firewalls 
 attach to the Internet, but firewalls can be used in an intranet also. 
 The firewall has two functions: 
    - it lets users in your network use authorized resources located on 
      an outside network. 
    - it keeps unauthorized users who are outside your network from using 
      resources within the network. 

 Firewall For AS/400 enables an Integrated PC Server to function as a 
 firewall. This separate processor enables the Web server and other 
 functions in the main AS/400 processor to be used safely. 

 DOMINO.ACTION 

 Domino.Action provides components that enable companies to build their 
 own Web sites. 

 DOMINO.MERCHANT 

 Domino.Merchant enables electronic selling from registering site 
 visitors and delivering information on demand, to maintaining a catalog, 
 accepting and processing payments via a credit card or a purchase order. 

 AS/400 CLIENT ACCESS - NEW FAMILIES 

 The AS/400 Client Access Family has been revised and is now available in 
 two versions -- the new Client Access For Windows and the original 
 Client Access Family.  As/400 Client Access For Windows supports 
 Microsoft Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 3.1, and Windows for 
 Workgroup 3.11 PC operating system. 

 IBM WIRELESS CONNECTION FOR AS/400 

 IBM Wireless Connection For AS/400 is a networking program for OS/400 
 Version 4 Release 1 connecting the AS/400 Wireless LAN bar code scanning 
 devices to RISC-based AS/400 through a wireless LAN network. This 
 provides powerful and flexible solutions for applications such as 
 wireless data collection and wireless bar code scanning. 

 AS/400e server MODEL 150 SOFTWARE 

 IBM AS/400e server Model 150 BasePak is a complete package of software 
 functions preloaded on every e-server Model 150. BasePak can be 
 purchased as an upgrade for Advanced Entry Model 150 systems currently 
 using V3R7. 


 PRODUCT PREVIEWS 

 NETWORK COMPUTING ENHANCEMENTS 

 IBM will deliver a range of enhancements for configuration, routing, 
 customer support, and performance for AS/400 network computing. 
 Additional APIs will be provided. The AS/400 will continue to evolve as 
 the platform for building the next generation of business applications. 

 LOTUS NOTES (DOMINO) 

 Native Domino (Lotus Notes server code) on the AS/400 will provide 
 industry leading collaborative technology. AS/400 will be an enterprise- 
 strength Domino platform offering greater reliability and scalability 
 than other Notes servers. 

 Using the Integrated PC Server of the AS/400, Domino Server 4.5 will 
 enable collaborative computing on AS/400 over the Internet, using 
 standard Web browsers; for example Netscape. 

 NATIVE JAVA 

 The native Java compiler and interpreter will give the AS/400 and 
 improved development environment for network-centric applications. 
 AS/400 Java will provide platform independence for Business Partner 
 and customer application developers. Client and server applications will 
 be supported. 

 TOOLBOX FOR JAVA 

 AS/400 Toolbox For Java will greatly simplify the development process 
 with ready-to-use class libraries. This will help AS/400 customers 
 create new Java client applications that can access data and 
 applications in the AS/400 server. 

 SAN FRANCISCO 

 San Francisco is a collection of business process components and 
 services using the latest object-oriented programming, frameworks, 
 browser, and Java language technologies. ISVs can produce robust 
 applications and components built on top of San Francisco reusable 
 business process components and scalable services. 

 NET.COMMERCE 

 Net.Commerce for AS/400 helps companies expand their geographic reach, 
 sell to new market segments, reduce costs, and implement targeted 
 marketing programs. This includes companies selling products or services 
 on the Internet and companies printing and mailing catalogs. 

 INTEGRATED NT PC SERVER 

 The Integrated NT PC Server will enable you to run NT Server personal 
 productivity applications without a separate NT server. AS/400 
 Business Partners and customers can continue to develop and run their 
 mission-critical applications on the AS/400. AS/400 and NT integration, 
 including hardware devices, user profiles, databases, and file systems, 
 will make it less complex or costly for you to manage separate servers. 

 AS/400 SOFTWARE MAINTENANCE AND SUPPORT OFFERING 

 Beginning with Version 4, updates to AS/400 software -- releases or 
 versions will generally be released yearly or perhaps more frequently. 
 IBM intends to provide a software maintenance and support offering 
 that will include entitlement to IBM AS/400 software program updates 
 and software voice defect and usage support for a predictable 
 periodic charge. Details of this offering will be announced at a later 
 date. 

 This offering, once it is in effect, will be required for Version 4 
 customers to obtain future IBM AS/400 program updates, from IBM or a 
 Business Partner. 


                    TERMS AND CONDITIONS 

 V4R! combines dramatic price and performance improvements through a 
 new simplified price structure. 

 OS/400 PACKAGED WITH e series SYSTEM 

 IBM has changed the way it packages OS/400 by including the AS/400 
 operating system in the base charges of the selected new AS/400. 
    - All new AS/400e series and upgrades to the new AS/400e series are 
      packaged with Version 4 Release 1 for a single price. Customers no 
      longer need to deal with separate hardware and operating system 
      prices when planning for and ordering a new AS/400e series. 
    - All optional features of OS/400 Version 4 remain chargeable. 

 OS/400 USER CHARGES ELIMINATED FOR VERSION 3 

 From August 19, 1997, OS/400 Version 3 will no longer be user-based. 
 There will be new graduated base charges for Version 3 for each of the 
 five current processor groups, which entitle customers to unlimited use 
 of OS/400 Version 3, and customers will no longer have to specify the 
 number of users required, when ordering Version 3. Version upgrades to 
 Version 3 will consist of a single base upgrade charge only and group- 
 to-group upgrades will also consist of the single revised group-to-group 
 charge only.

 The following service offerings are available with the announcement of 
 the AS/400e series. Many are SmoothStart service offerings which provide 
 a consistent architecture, install, customize and provide basic skill 
 transfer on the product. For further information on these offerings, 
 contact your Global Services representative. 

 SMOOTHSTART FOR FIREWALL provides for the installation, configuration, 
 and basic skills transfer information of the Firewall For AS/400 product 

 SMOOTHSTART FOR INTERNET CONNECTION FOR AS/400-SECURE SERVER provides a 
 specialist to plan, install, and customize the AS/400 as a secure server 

 SMOOTHSTART FOR CLIENT ACCESS/400 provides a specialist to plan, install 
 and customize the Client Access/400 environment to a recommended 
 configuration. 

 SMOOTHSTART FOR NOVELL NETWATER ON AS/400 IPCS provides a specialist to 
 install OS/400 Integration for Novell NetWare on the AS/400 Integrated 
 PC Server to allow the AS/400 to act as a NetWare Server. 

 LOTUS NOTES SERVICES FOR AS/400 provides a specialist to assist with the 
 initial installation of Lotus Notes on the AS/400. Additional optional 
 services to enable remote client access, information exchange between 
 servers are also available. Installation and configuration support for 
 Lotus Domino is also available. 

 IBM PLANNING SERVICE FOR AS/400 - YEAR 2000 APPLICATION INVENTORY 
 provides a specialist to assist in the creation of a Year 2000 
 application inventory documenting the status in regards to source code 
 availability, currency dates and the availability of a Year 2000 version 
 of the application. 

 IBM MIGRATION SERVICES - DATA MIGRATION provides direct access storage 
 device (DASD) installation or migration services.
