Yeah!  Sounds kinda like COBOL:

01 fld1.
 02 fld1a.
  03 fld1a1 pic x(1).
  03 fld1a2 pic x(1).
 02 fld1b  pic x(1).

fld1 is length 3, fld1a is length 2.

No offense, Hans, but I really like the new D specs because they are   
closer to COBOL (and others) when it comes to flexibility in describing   
data.  No about those multi-dimensional arrays...

PS

It's been at least 5 years since I coded any COBOL so my little sample   
may not be syntactically correct, but I think the idea is sound.

It is not my intention, nor my desire, to start a "language war".   
 Matching new information to existing, well-understood patterns is an   
excellent learning device.
