You need a small program to convert from/to a regular file, such as: 
     F* Use OVRDBF for the database file
     F* Use OVRSAVF for the save file
     FFILEIN  IP  F     528            DISK
     FFILEOUT O   F     528            DISK
     IFILEIN  NS  01
     I                                        1 528 DATA
     IDATA        DS                            528
     OFILEOUT D        01
     O                         DATA     528
(And no - this code sample is not an invitation for purists who don't like
 the RPG cycle, or who have a problem with program described files, to
 criticize !)   ;-)
