I don't know about lexmark, but I'm sending binary data to HP printers,
so maybe there's some similarity. The first secret that I found was that
the printer device must be configured to use host print transform. Your
unprintable character message went away for me as soon as I set that up.
The next trick I found was the TRNSPY and CVTDTA DDS field level
keywords. With this combination, you can send hexadecimal text and it
will be translated to the corresponding binary value as the printer file
gets written to the output queue. The data length is reduced to 1/2 of
the declared length. In order to send the escape code, I just output
'1B' (text - not hex), and it gets written as an escape code. I'm
working on a project that will send form overlays to TCP jet direct
printers using this method. You can do quite a bit with it.
