Hey Dave - that's easy.  If you have one of those $500 IBM modems,
instead of one of those $99.95 K-Mart Specials (or was that a USR ;-) 
)  they have indicators on the front panel that tell you what speed you
connected at !  (Must be those extra blinking LED's, and the Synchronous
& leased line support, that cost the extra $400).   

(Of course, there's always the CONNECT 24000 message or whatever that
you should see on an Async connection).
