You may also look at an NT or OS/2 solution running DB2 locally and then
transmitting the data redundantly to the AS/400 via DDCS/APPC/APPN. 
This
is by far the most stable solution I have seen for the AS/400.  You can 
also stage the data input to the AS/400 during the time when it is being
backed-up and regularly IPL'd, etc.
