No, the front end doesn't do anything except pass the source to the API.  

I''' experiment with the code line supplied and see what happens.

Did your front end (RPG or otherwise) remember to always append the
following 22 bytes to your MI source code:

/*'/*'/*"/*"*/;PEND;;;

This will forestall those MCH0601 problems into more manageable mis-matched
quote problems.
