From: Steve Richter <srichter@autocoder.com> > Opening the source code would breath a lot of life into our system. AFAIK, IBM does not develop OS/400 on the AS/400 but on RS/6000 or equivalent. OS/400 images or objects are then transferred over (Think of changing SLIC on a running AS/400) maybe as PTFs or something like it. So the whole "infrastructure" around the source of OS/400 must also be opened up. Very likely, the developers (us) must adopt a similar way of working (i.e. not using the AS/400 as our development platform). This is not going to happen, but you are correct, the AS/400 would get a new lease on life. Only problem is that it is doubtful if IBM even want this rather than slowly to bleed the platform dry and get rid of it.
