thanks for the feedback. Any response that does not repeat itself now goes down the "should os/400 provide the 2nd level api's that many shops wind up writing or using taatools for" path. I vote YES and will leave it at that. Now if anyone wants to discuss the microsoft .NET approach .... .NET provides a class and member function interface to the os. To relate it to my data area issue, the os would provide a DataArea class. The class then has member functions like Crt, Dlt, Rtv, Chg, Lock, ... All programs that run on a windows .NET pc have access to the class.
