You apparently got this working okay, but two alternatives that weren't mentioned might be useful to others. First, OpsNav Network>IP Security allows journaling of selected TCP/IP traffic. For some uses, this _might_ be sufficient. But make sure you have a non-TCP/IP connection available before playing too much so you can run the RMVTCPTBL *IPFTR command if you lock yourself out. (Hard-earned lesson. Last time I dug there, the default filter rule was a generic DENY. Once you establish filtering, you need a catch-all rule at the bottom to allow everything you didn't explicitly DENY or allow otherwise everything else gets denied.) Also, IBM Custom Technology Center provides their Duplex Socket Server client-side APIs for free (up to a few months ago at least). If pressed, they will also supply a limited subset of their server-side APIs that allow you to create a socket server suitable for testing. Both sides include a trace option. If you need quick prototypes, these APIs are great; and the tracing can tell you a lot. The APIs are supplied both OPM and ILE making them available even to CLPs.
