I would us the IM off-line load function to do the item master updates. You can change nearly all fields through that function the only problem if formatting to the off-line file. I am more of a MS SQL developer than an RPG developer so I will usually use DTS to pump the date into the off-line file, this addresses the formatting issue rather well.
