In 1 firm I was with, with or without a bar code, the serial number was key. We had a program written that when an RM or an SA transaction was being processed, the reference field had to be populated with at least the letters n/a if the rare case of no serial number was used. Along with that, we had a query to match the reference & item number fields of the RM with a corresponding SA fields daily to insure that an inventory item which required a serial number for shipment had been manufactured and serialized. It was a quick check every day. Any customer inquiry by serial number was available through a query run through the history file in a serial number search of the reference. Dennis Guy Vaillant
