Not an automated solution, but we basically reprimand people that leave batches open. After they get in trouble, they started closing and posting their batches. But that solution doesn't work for everyone..... I personally think aborting backups on "Closed" or "Suspended" batches is dumb on MAPICS' part. "Active" I understand, people are keying (and there should be a "kick 'em off and suspend their batch" option in backups), but it's been that way a loooong time. Very aggravating. Every time we hire a new 3rd shift person that keys I/M tickets, we have aborted backups until we get them straightened out.
