Greg,

We had the same problem with buzzers not matching system time - and we are
a union shop. Problems! We decided we had to trigger the buzzers from the
AS/400 (iSeries). Sooo.....

My network administrator built a unit (called the Corkwerks400) that you
can see at www.vidtronics.com. I wrote a small RPG program that accesses a
file that contains times to set off the buzzers. The program sits and runs
on an old, dedicated PC (running full Client Access) that checks the time
every 20 seconds, and if the system time matches a time in the file
(indexed by day-of-week and time-of-day) it triggers a PC print command and
updates the file as "buzzed". I reset the status weekly - it's not
necessary, but I do it as an audit trail to show that we did ring the
buzzers at a certain time.

The Corkwerks400 is connected to the dedicated PC via the printer port with
a standard printer cable. When it receives a signal from the PC, it
triggers a relay that sets off the buzzers by powering a switch. There are
several options on the Corkwerks400 that can be used to trigger a buzzer
system - I use a standard 110v outlet. When the relay triggers, the
buzzers get power. There are several other options available in the
Corkwerks400 that should support about any buzzer system you may have.

My network administrator was considering making them and selling them, but
never got around to it. If you are interested, you can e-mail directly
from the web site. We never got around to doing an interest survey.

BTW - in case you are curious about the name, my nickname is Cork and my
network administrator has a dry sense of humor and was thinking this was
the only way he'd see Cork work. Hence "Corkwerks". The 400 came from
AS/400, naturally.

He is still employed here, incidentally..... :)

Dale,

Can you give details on that buzzer system that the AS400 drives.
Our AS400 and the clocks in the factory are always a few minutes off.

Pete,

On the thin clients we use (Affirmative's and CLI's), you can set them up
to autostart a TN5250 session and logon automatically. I set up the
user-ID to automatically run a CL that starts the MDCC T&A screen. All you
have to do is push the power button and in a minute you have the T&A
clock-in/out screen.

The green screen MDCC T&A screen works just fine - shows the name and
in/out status. The only issue is the lack of a running clock on the screen
that is big enough for the users to see. But since we built a buzzer
system that the AS/400 drives, that's not an issue anymore.

Cork,
Are those terminals you setup for T&A dedicated to just T&A?
Or can/do they do other transactions?
If dedicated is there someplace to config that certain terminals will do
nothing but T&A??
I guess I am not sure what you mean by autostart into T&A green screen!!!!
Thanks
Pete

Jeff,

I think the closest you can come to a "dumb" clock for use with MDCC/PLMC
is to use a thin client PC or terminal that autostarts into the green
screen T&A option. We use that on several of our doors/gates - all you
have to do is turn the device on and in a minute or so it comes up as a T&A
device. No keyboard or mouse is required, just the display screen and a
badge reader (the device is hidden away).

Works just fine....

Ref : Time / Attendance

I have a customer who has the 'paperless' data collection product and
would like to use dumb time clocks to record, swipe, TA in /out and
feed
PLMC, PMC, PR, etc.

I am an 'application guy', and dont really have the tech. background to
answer this inquiry.

I was wondering if anybody had any experience in this area and had any
suggestions , hardware wise, and or 'issue' wise.

Thanks
