Joan,

I've never experienced backup problems with the trigger programs, but I have
had problems when I transferred a triggered file to another system that
didn't have the trigger program. Since the trigger program is a "part" of
the file, you have to restore both to use the file. My quick fix was to
remove the trigger from the file until I compiled the source code.

I haven't removed triggers to do any PTF's, but I expect that I've been
lucky that those files/programs haven't touched the file structures I've
worked with.

My biggest gripe with triggers is that you have to have an object lock on
the file to manipulate the trigger. Several times I've found a "feature"
with the trigger code that needs to be fixed, but I have to get everyone out
of COM to fix it. I know you can get around this with CL programs calling
the RPG trigger programs, but I haven't explored this yet.

I am at version 5. I understand 6.0 forces you to use MAPICS' trigger
programs, which concerns me. Sometimes I have to "massage" the data before
it is written to the disk file, and not knowing exactly how XA6 makes the
call to custom trigger programs makes me wonder if my changes will be made
when I expect them to be. Does anyone have experience with this?

Patrick

Patrick,

Since you mentioned trigger programs, I have a couple of questions for you
and the rest of the group. I'm beginning to look into writing some trigger
programs, both in Integrator/Browser and for plain-MAPICS updates. I know
I'd have to remove the triggers when applying updates and CUMe's, but I was
warned that trigger programs can also mess up your backups. (Both MAPICS and
AS/400 is what was implied to me)

Are there problems with getting good backup files/tapes when you use
triggers? What kind of problems? Where can I go for more information?

Thanks to all -- Joan

We don't use EPDM here, but one option that you could explore does work for
us in other areas. Create a trigger program on the cost files/fields. This
program would verify to a database the approved cost "managers", and prevent
changes to this field if the user is not in this database. If the user isn't
authorized, simply replace the keyed value with the original. You would want
to use a before change trigger for this to work.

I haven't done this in the client architecture, so I'd TEST and TEST again.
However, for green screen manipulation this approach would work.

The MAPICS security does not give you that level of granularity. Might want
to rethink the business process.

That is correct ofcourse.
But as far as i can see there is no difference between cost fields for
security. The same user who can maintain current cost shouldn't be abble to
maintain standard cost and that is my problem. If was looking for seperate
security between current and standard cost.
