Joan,

I use a 2 different options for SQL on the 400.
1) STRSQL from an AS/400 command line takes you into an interactive SQL
session allowing you to select/update/delete/insert records in a file. The
prerequisite is licensed program 57xxST1 (DB2 Query Mgr and SQL DevKit for
AS/400). You'll know if you have based on whether or not the STRSQL
command even exists. By the way, library and file names are specified they
way we know and love LIBRARY/FILE. Results are brought back to the green
screen.

2) In AS/400 operations navigator, under your AS400 connection, if you
click on Database, an icon (blue with spreadsheet and gears) appears across
the toolbar area that allows for running of interactive SQL statements.
That will open a window where you can run any SQL statement against any
file on the 400. This works regardless of whether you have the above
mentioned licensed program. In this SQL environment, the library and file
names are specified as LIBRARY.FILE. Results are brought back in a
spreadsheet type window that allows for easy cut and paste into Excel.

Be careful with SQL as you can easily destroy the contents of a file in one
statement.

If you ever hear someone say oops while doing SQL, it is not a good thing!

Happy SQLing!

Hi!

I have just finished Intro to, Intermediate Applications of and Adv Appls
of
SQL through our local univeristy continuing ed program. I am now thoroughly
dangerous!

What tool do those of you who use SQL use with MAPICS / AS/400? We don't
have (and really don't need) MS SQL Server. Any suggestions?

I've played with Access today, and can query MAPICS files, but can't update
- or at least I haven't found the magic button yet.

Have a good weekend -- Joan
