This is a multipart message in MIME format. -- [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] Greg, you may be being too kind when comparing OE&I to COM! But that's water under the bridge. We also looked VERY hard at in-house programming to replace our data collection. In fact, we actually did some of our own where we absolutely HAD to enforce business rules. But overall, I still prefer to buy packaged solutions. They go in faster, and generally have more features than in-house developed packages. It's generally easier to upgrade versions, also. But it does cost more up front, and you do have to balance ALFs versus usage. Incidentally, we bit the bullet a while back and jumped from "processor based" fees to "user based" fees. The one time cost was pretty steep, but we figure we'll more than make it up on savings on upgrades, which we do about every other year. That's an option worth considering. COM performs at about half the pace of OEI. If you buy a faster computer, MAPICS will want a bundle of money in license fees. But to answer your question about data collection and T/A. About 7 years ago we wrote our own data collection and T/A programs. Since then we have saved probably hundreds of thousands of dollars in licensing fees and we have a system that is completely tailored to are needs. We had PERMS for a while and let the license expire. So I am suggesting that along with the purchased programs you should consider in house programming too. Our company is currently running Mapics/DB, with the old DCSI and PERMS packages and we are planning to implement Mapics/XA in the next year or so. In preparation for that we are looking at what packages are available and the consensus of users and their thoughts who have implemented or used the newer DCSI / HIGHJUMP and PERMS packages or other packages, and why they choose them over HIGHJUMP and PERMS. The current versions of these packages are ridiculous and riddled with problems. So we are looking for as many opinions on the Data Collection, Time & Attendance and HR systems - as possible. Roy W.
