James, What we did was to obtain the LTL Freight rates from Roadway. We got them on tape then loaded them into a PF on our AS/400. Then based on the weight, ship from zip and ship to zip we can pretty closely estimate what the freight will be. We then took it one step further and added a discount percentage by which we adjust for other carriers. We actually drill the discount down to the state to which the invoice is shipped. We do not use COM or OE&I. We have a home grown order entry. I'm not sure what would be required to implement this solution into Mapics. Sounds easy, but the problem occurs with freight companies. The current method is to bill the customer for the freight amount after the client recieves the bill from the freight company. This usually is a few weeks after the material was shipped. When shipping UPS this is not a problem thanks to the UPS software calculating the freight amount and the Shipping Department can just add the freight charge then. Having the Shipping Department figure out the freight amount for truck orders is not an option, unless it is as easy as the UPS method. The client has looked at a package from AR Traffic Consultants that is supposed to integrate into MAPICS with a little programing. Cost of that package is holding up the approval for that solution. How do other people handle this and what are the pros/cons of doing it that way? Thanks for any input.
