James -

Absolutely! That's why you need a utility like Monarch/ValetMiner!

Sorry to sound like a walking advertisement, but Monarch is the coolest
utility I've ever found. The first demo I saw in about 1991 or 92 blew me
away. You can't "parse" a mult-lined report in Excel, but you (usually) can
with Monarch. And you can set the "field to cell" relationships. And your
output isn't limited to Excel - it also "does" Lotus, dBASE, Paradox,
Access, fixed-length text files, and delimited files. If you can't use one
of these formats...

Lest you think I think Monarch can do no wrong, I can easily write a report
that it cannot parse correctly. The very first report I tried to use it with
went something like this:

detail line A fieldA fieldB fieldC fieldD

detail line B fieldA notes notes
                               fieldB fieldC fieldD

detail line C fieldA fieldB fieldC etc...

That is, if there were notes for the record, the notes were placed at the
end of the first line and the fields displaced were written on a second line
that was not there if a record had no notes associated. This is not the
Monarch software's fault - some bone-headed programmer or (worse) user who
wanted the report written that way messed up the system. I did find at least
one standard MAPICS report that has a similar problem - can't remember now
which one it was, but I think it comes out of IFM or COM (figures).

Anyhow, check out the Momentum web site www.jacana.com - there's a white
paper about a certain company's use of ValetMiner, which modesty forbids me
to mention. (grin)

Yes, but doesn't excel butcher the spool file?

Turning each line into a row, no 'field' to cell relationship?

can you comment on that for me?

thanks.....james

I have used Monarch with old System 36 and MAPICS. If you have Client
Access
and any Office Product, setting up import into EXCEL or Access is very
easy.
Would be happy to go over this with you offline.
