This is a multipart message in MIME format. -- [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] We ship 75% of our shipments via UPS or FedEx Ground, using their PC-based systems (which they provided us). Their systems generate the shipping/return labels as part of their normal process. For common carrier shipments, we put a low-end Okidata printer in shipping that the shipping associates use to generate shipping/return labels - a small RPG program that takes an order# and prints the ship-to address on the label. Again, I feel obligated to point out that this is not necessarily a replacement for Varsity Shipper, which provides a great deal more (but for which I couldn't get financial approval), and doesn't (usually) require any custom programming. But this is a pretty darn good alternative, and it allowed me to implement a very low-cost data collection solution in our shipping department. mbennett@kimray.com Sent by: mapics-l-admin@midrange.com 08/22/01 09:33 AM Please respond to mapics-l To: mapics-l@midrange.com cc: Subject: Re: Freight charges Re: Labels I was just wondering what you use to get the shipping and return address on the packages. Varsity does that pretty well for us but I am always looking for a way to save a buck. We currently use a PC rating package called ExpressWorks from Roadway, which isn't currently integrated (pretty primitive). I am currently working with Roadway to see how to get similar capabilites as we get from UPS and FedEx Ground. Note: this isn't as slick as VARSITY Logistics (they offer more capability, as I recall), but it's free. I don't understand the question on how I label the shipments. UPS and FedEx assign tracking numbers (which we accept and add to the order, both in the tracking number field and as order comments, using a batch RPG program we wrote), Roadway assigns Pro-numbers, which I want to do the same with. Is that what you mean? mbennett@kimray.com Sent by: mapics-l-admin@midrange.com 08/21/01 04:50 PM Please respond to mapics-l To: mapics-l@midrange.com cc: Subject: Re: Freight charges Thanks Dale for the OFFSHIP lead. We are using VARSITY Logistics right now but perhaps we can save some annual maint money. Do you ship LTL as well? And how do you label the shipments?
