I have been reading some blogs and it sounds like replacing the HD voids the
warranty (hmm... sounds a bit like IBM i and memory!!)

Doing a price check it looks like I can get 8GB memory for $437 from a
variety of sources, so it isn't cheap, but I can save a little.

No, get one with a 5400RPM HD, then buy a _good_ SSD. For example,
Intel's X25-M or OCZ's Vertex line.

Not "much less". The 4GB sticks are still very expensive.
