yes I also was thinking the windows was/is not for the masses,
but the masses (these that order computers in the shops) insists in using
windows, not linux.
there is the main rason i would like an more dedicated effort in IBM
environment (glup this includes BP...) in order to installs easily linux
apps in the desktop.
unfortunatelly found myself don't having the minimum knowledge in the linux
arena (nor in the windows, really).

20 years of Cobol and RPG (and a little help from cgi + html + js + css) are
not enough these days, only wondering if an linux desktop (including 5250
emulation) would be "easy" of deploy to end users, ?maybe using some
preconfigured vm?

Happy New Year.
Guillermo.

I'ved write all these not-being-humans instructions, but at end, when
type ibm5250 xxx.xx.x.x I get this error:
"ibm5250: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory
"

If a guy with 20 years of experience in as400 and (ugh) windows can't
run an terminal emulator I think Linux is not for the masses.
I will to re-try in a new year with less alcohol in blood.

Thanks anyway for the efforts .

Here is what I have just used for Ubuntu 9.10 and Linux Mint 8.

These instructions work for Ubuntu 9.10 and Linux Mint 8 (which is
based on Ubuntu 9.10) and are based on Nate Bounds work on Ubuntu
help forums.

Download iSeries Access for Linux here:

http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/download/search.jsp?go=y&rs=ial<
http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/download/search.jsp?go=y&rs=ial>

I use the v6r1 version and I download it to my Downloads directory.

Get into terminal. Then:

# cd Downloads
# sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts -y
# sudo fc-cache -f -v
# sudo apt-get install libmotif3 alien -y
#sudo alien -i iSeriesAccess-6.1.0-1.0.i386.rpm -cv
# xset fp
# ibm5250 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx or domain name of as400/iseries/i5/system
i/whatever_it_is_called_today

You can use setup5250 to customize the installation. To make a
launcher, go to a desktop and right click and select 'Create Launcher' and
place ibm5250 and desired session attributes in the command field.

On my PC, there's soft link in /usr/lib64:
libstdc++.so -> libstdc++.so.6.0.10
