I've installed two ubuntu in vm in xp, the installation and upgrades was all
ok, everything works fine: firefox, open office, my david gilmour videos,
works great.
also is really great the language support, the ubuntu update and install
applications from the ubuntu catalog.

but I like install other applications (as IBM Access or mocha) simply
downloading from internet (as in windows). for me, installing all these apps
are an nightmare.
this point is critical for going to desktop in the normal offices. also I
think IBM would do more efforts in supporting popular linux distros as
ubuntu, curiously IBM is making an venture with canonical (ubuntu) and
redhat for offering desktop linux:

Fedora and loaded it with __NO__ problems.

I'm pretty new to Linux myself. I have an Ubuntu desktop at home that I
just upgraded to 9.10, and since I was running NVIDIA proprietary drivers it
broke. I spent three days figuring out how to correct the problem. During
this same time I was still, after three WEEKS, trying to fix my Windows XP
pc that locks up within a few minutes to a few hours after booting.

The Ubuntu pc is up and running. The Windows XP pc is still locking up. I
have over 20 years in IT and I still have more trouble with Windows than I
do with Linux. I started playing around with Linux about a year ago. The
conclusion seems obvious to me.
