You need to set font_80 and font_132 to control the fonts in xt5250.
(you have font80 set rather than font_80, and you don't have font_132 set at all)

I created a .tn5250rc file (all lower-case) in the home directory and
started "xt5250 brcc2" and it came up, but the fonts were small. :(

Even after copying it to /usr/local/etc/tn5250rc it is small fonts. :-(

Can you tell me how to reproduce the problem? I'm not having that
problem on mine.

Ok... it doesn't appear to be honoring the TN5250rc file... here's the
contents of that file:

brcc2 {
host = brcc2
map = 37
font80 = -*-courier-bold-*-*-*-18-180-75-*-*-*-iso8859-1
env.TERM = IBM-3179-2
+underscores
}

I tried both as .tn5250rc in the home directory and as a "system-wide" in
/usr/local/etc/tn5250rc
