I tried the same thing and got the same results. I even tried the font samples from the HOWTO that I know used to work and it still didn't work.

Do you have x5250 installed? I just tried running x5250 like this and it worked perfectly:

x5250 -fn 12x24 <session name>

Nice big fonts.
