All X5250 files I have are the same.  The difference is in the program 
versions.  For the record, I'm using Fedora Core 3 with Gnome.

$ x5250 --debug-resources as400
Application resource database:
[nothing important here]
Server resource database:
foreground: #000000
background: #e6e6e6
User resource database:
Command line resource database:


OK, so it got #e6e6e6 from the server resource database (wherever that 
might be); the old version didn't use that (I guess.)  I added a line to 
X5250 which fixed the problem.

x5250*background                : black
