Yes, now I understand the layering and that was the piece I was missing. I still don't know what was wrong with the prior install, but now that I've downloaded and recompiled all is well. Very frustrating but at least I can breath easier now. I was afraid I was going to lose 2 days worth of compiling and configuration (the problem with Gentoo is it takes a long time to get everything up and running, nothing is pre-packaged).
