PDF Reference Third Edition version 1.4 from adobe systems. 38.49 USD at amazon.com. I have not used this book yet, so I can't say if it's any good. If it's like the Postscript language reference, it's not a really a how-to, but a reference. There is sample code on the internet - the source code to ghostscript, which can generate both PS and PDF.
