I want to thank everyone that made suggestions on loading the System
Openness Includes and JDK 1.3 for v5.1 without the installation disks.
Ultimately, it was good old IBM that came through. They sent me a new set of
v5.1 disks. I had to fill out a form and go through a process, Withdrawn
Order Process and Template for Archived Product Code --i/pSeries (non
zSeries) and, viola, a new set of disks arrived in the mail. All of the
folks that I talked to at IBM were helpful and knowledgeable. They seemed
focused on helping me with my issue and not just getting through the call,
like so many other help desk centers I have dealt with. They even double
checked with me that I was okay with receiving these disks without software
support. They were concerned about my being able to use them without help,
not their getting a piece of the pie! (Try to get that kind of service from
Microsoft. It would be the equivalent of asking MS for a set of replacement
disks for Windows 98 or NT.) Best of all, it was FREE!! I am sorry for the
blatant plug here, but IBM support ROCKS!!!
Now that I have that fixed, do I need to set up a TCP/IP connection on the
AS400 with the server hosting the SQL database before trying to perform
Java/SQL commands to access data from it or just provide a path with the IP
address when I submit a connect command? I ask because my attempts thus far
have proved fruitless.
