I like using data queue's to transfer complex data between Java & RPG.

Take a look at using RecordFormat's (http://javadoc.midrange.com/jtopen/com/ibm/as400/access/RecordFormat.html) to define the structure of the data queue entry. That makes it super easy to keep your RPG's data structure & java data in sync.
