Well, since you asked. IBM is not blameless in getting customers into this situation so they should do something. Maybe just give people the option of paying under a subscription model instead of a purchase model. If purchase is $4,000+ and $400 a year maintenance let me subscribe and pay $800 a year which includes maintenance, and if I stop paying I stop having the right to use it. And do what Novell use to do and put the $400 a year subscription into a buy-out plan so at some point in the future (10 years) I get a license like I purchased it and drop to $400 a year maintenance.
