Works well for us. Expect to profile to identify bottlenecks as some AS/400 operations are somewhat slow (i.e. creating a new member in a file). This includes ensuring that there is sufficient memory available as the java design does not lend to swapping unused objects to disk (they are peeked at when garbage collecting).

I agree on the comment that writing Java which utilizes the features of the language properly requires training. Just porting RPG/Cobol to Java may not be quite enough.
