you could hit the file/table with JDBC and base your decision on the result.
Thanks to all for the responses. The V5R4 API is not an option as we and customers run at V5R3, alas.

Your suggestion is wicked but delightfully simple and will - I believe - work for us.

The AS/400 is truly a different beast than most other systems :)
