I'd use Notepad before I tried Navigator. Seriously. If you have a
really old PC at home, download the SDK, use Notepad to edit and the
command line to compile and test. When it's all working, schlep the
source up to System i and compile it up there from the command line.
You may not even need to do that - this sort of code ought to run from
your PC just fine, as long as you can reach the System i from home.
Regarding the code, I don't think I'd try to learn Java from Infocenter
examples. They're not really educational, more like a fragmentary
overview of one narrow idea at a time. Which is great for reference,
not so great for training.
