Lots of good suggestions.  If you don't mind spending a little money
(very little, it's super cheap) and want something that works nicely,
check out CVTDBFXLS from Kemetech.  We use it a great deal, and it
works pretty nicely.  We use FTP, network shares and browser based
apps to upload the Excel spreadsheets.

And generally, we upload the data into work files with all alpha
fields, then read through it to validate.  It is definitely a GIGO
scenario.
