This is what I came up with:
public class TestFormat {

        public static void main(String[] args) {
                
                String before = "1111222233334444";
                DecimalFormat fmt = new
DecimalFormat("####,####,####,####");
                String after = fmt.format(new
BigDecimal(before)).replace(',', '-');
                System.out.println(after);
                System.exit(0);
                
        }
}

Anybody know if there is a way to get "####-####-####-####" pattern to
work in this case?  I tried it and the result is not what I expected.

For a strictly numeric field, I would use java.text.NumberFormat.

Not sure NumberFormat could handle that kind of formatting ... but check
the subclasses of java.text.Format.
