Format a string -- JAVA400-L

can somebody give me an example of an easy way to format a string like
rpg %editc or %editw bif does to format a numeric field?
 
Example: If I got a string that contains value of 1111222233334444 and
the format word/code is '    -    -    -    ' , the result of the
formatted string should be 1111-2222-3333-4444.
