here is what I do in a CL before I call the RPGLE (with 
Jakarta POI):

CHGCURDIR  DIR('/jakartapoi')                            
ADDENVVAR  ENVVAR(CLASSPATH) +                           
VALUE('.:/jakartapoi:/jakartapoi/jakartapoi151.jar') +   
             REPLACE(*YES)
