You may want to take a look at Eclipse as an IDE for you to develop
JSP. You could also use Tomcat as your servlet container, at least initially. If you create a Tomcat project in Eclipse, most of the subtleties of setting of the environment can be taken care of by Eclipse. Joe's book, "Eclipse Step by Step" is great for getting you through the basics.
WSDc is also an alternative.
