Ha!  Yes, but usually it's just to determine what JDBC driver to load or
whether we're in test vs. production environments.  The rest of the code
runs perfectly everywhere of course <bigger-G>

I thought Java was write once, run anywhere.  You mean one needs to know
that platform one is running on and do things differently because of it?
