This is slightly off the beaten path, but if anybody is interested in a
small, capable, 100% Pure Java SQL database engine to use for testing
applications and whatnot, you might be interested in the HSQLDB product.

It's a SourceForge project (http://sourceforge.net/projects/hsqldb) based on
the Hypersonic SQL engine, and it supports both in-memory and disk-based
tables.

Since some of the more prevalent free versions are going commercial (mSQL)
or sort of dying off (tinySQL), it's nice to see a fully featured database
like this available for free.

Not only is it free, but it has an HTTP-only connection mode that will allow
you to connect to a database on another machine through a firewall using
just HTTP.

There are other "free" databases - mySQL and PostGreSQL come to mind. But
the simplicity with which HSQLDB is installed is unparalleled. Include the
JAR file in your library path, and you're done.
