Accessing AS/400 data

 

I'm a total novice at this but wanted to find out if there is  
a sockets method to send and receive data between my PC and AS/400.

I am thinking that there would need to be some kind of listener on both 
machines waiting for a request. 

I know about products i.e MQ Series - but I am looking for a simpler - less 
expensive method..

any code samples would be greatly appreciated....
