I am not sure how nicely Java will "play" with COBOL.  When we did a COBOL
project, we had the COBOL program and Java program communicate using an RPG
socket program and XML.  In other words, the Java would parse out the XML
and the RPG socket program parses out program calls, etc.  The RPG program
would then call the COBOL program directly.  This worked nicely for our
situation.  Using XML eliminated the need for arrays.
