Subject: Re: JDK 1.4 broke applets

Yes, except that if your firewall is the dreaded AS/400 firewall, at least if

you're unable to use the "use browser settings" checkbox, the plug-in will,
at
least in our experience, ask for a user-ID even if the firewall is
configured
not to require it, and will ignore entries in the "no browser
hosts" field,
insisting on going to the firewall anyway.

In our
experience, too, we've found that if an applet is running entirely
inside
the firewall, but references, for example, images on web sites, it won't

fetch them, even though the browser can fetch them easily.

The maddening
parts of all this are (1) all this worked fine in the 1.3
plug-in, (2) all
this appears to work fine in command-line applications, (3)
Sun can't
duplicate it, and (4) once optimized for the 1.4 JVM, ThinView can do
some
neat things in 1.4, but only at the expense of losing other neat things
that
only work under
1.3.
