In our experience, too, we've found that if an applet is running entirely inside the firewall, but references, for example, images on web sites, it won't fetch them, even though the browser can fetch them easily. The maddening parts of all this are (1) all this worked fine in the 1.3 plug-in, (2) all this appears to work fine in command-line applications, (3) Sun can't duplicate it, and (4) once optimized for the 1.4 JVM, ThinView can do some neat things in 1.4, but only at the expense of losing other neat things that only work under 1.3. -- JHHL
