Fred -- I understand everything you said and it makes perfect sense. However, it is disconcerting for a customer to have to put on the Java Group PTF as part of the ship strategy just to get the javac compiler to work. While I recognize that the AS/400 (and iSeries) together with OS/400 are much more sophisticated and complex machines than a Wintel setup, it does seem to me that for the extra money the customer should be doing less work, not more. If IBM offered a JDK for Windows for download where the javac compiler couldn't find the String class until fixes were applied, people would rightly be up in arms. We're not talking about some esoteric Java feature here. I don't think iSeries customers should be asked to accept less.
