Mike, I not had any reason to look at J2ME so this may not apply to your case. My main exposure to WAP is via Cocoon, which makes publishing to multiple formats simpler -- pretty easy actually. The caveats are that it is not geared toward maintenance applications, can eat up memory if you are not careful, and is a pain to get working with WebSphere.
