Hi Chris. If you think WebFacing can do what you want, the runtime and tools are free for iSeries customers.... And you are also correct that it probably is not a fair comment to make, for the reasons you state. The problem with all the third party products we've looked at, is they all use some form of user or processor based pricing. Our main customer has a very big box, with a lot of users, so the cost is going to be high. The penny pinchers in managment look at the upfront costs and say what are the alternatives. So here I am, looking for suggestions... Thanks for the info on OHIO by the way... Chris. -----Original Message----- From: nimrod@jacada.com [mailto:nimrod@jacada.com] Sent: 12 November 2001 14:44 To: java400-l@midrange.com Subject: RE: New GUI for green on black... Hi Chris, While my e-mail identity may make me a prime suspect, let me try and help anyway. First of all, the "expensive" middleware products may eventually be inexpensive. The determining factor is the amount and complexity of work you need. And not just now - in the long run as well. What might seem "inexpensive" may turn out "cheap", because you may have to pay the price in labour, maintenance, support, lack of features, etc. If you still think that your choice is the right one for you, then can you elaborate some more on what control you need over the datastream? As for OHIO, If my memory serves me right it was designed by Attachmate (or another emulation vendor) as an "OO"-like version of EHLLAPI (which, to give you my $.02, should not have survived the introduction of Windows & OS/2, but technologies have an interesting survival pattern.....). But the bottom line is still - I suggest you take a serious look into the future, and then choose your strategy, rather than try to slam in some quick & dirty solution. TN5250j isn't really of any interest to me. For our customers if we're going to do a thick client application I can assume that the user will have a 5250 emulator already, (normally Client Access). os-ohio is of more interest, but the sourceforge site doesn't give any more information - theres no homepage. Incidentaly, where does the info on OHIO itself come from, I can't find any on the IBM website. What's the difference (if any) between OHIO & HACL? Hello Chris If you want control over the 5250 data stream there is a project on sourceforge http://sourcforge.net/projects/os-ohio. It is in java and does not have an HTML interface but the html can be generated. os-ohio is an Open Source implementation of the Open Host Interface Objects for java from IBM. You might want to give it a try but like I said it does create HTML but it does fit the non expensive middle ware requirement. As far as an in-expensive (Open Source) fat java client that can produce gui screens you can try http://sourcforge.net/projects/tn5250j. It has gotten good response in the past couple of months for the gui parts. Hope these help.
