What version are you using? I, too, decided that I was going to learn
to use it no matter what. Despite being seriously unhappy with IBM for
not providing a current version of VAJ for Linux, I've been working with
the "technology preview" Linux version for a couple of months, and am
nearing completion of a moderately complex program.

The first thing I can tell you is that "all weekend" is not going to cut
it. I had 1.0 and 2.0 for OS/2 and never quite got the hang of it. But
a light went on when I took IBM course OB75. Yes, the learning curve is
Himalayan. But once I got a flash of understanding about the Java Beans
thing and how those property connections work, I realized that there was
a whole lot about Java I didn't have a clue about and might never have
picked up on without VAJ, and that's after several years of coding Java
without an IDE. You may find that trying to learn both Java and VAJ at
the same time is not a good idea.

The 3.5 Windows version does have a reputation for being seriously buggy
(my instructor jokingly referred to it as "Residual Age"). Who knows
what version 4 will be like; rumor has it that it's actually written
in Java. And of course, if there is no Linux version I will *definitely*
jump ship. But having said all that, I think you should give it another
chance. Once you get to know it, it becomes almost an obsession. Check
out Scott Stanchfield's excellent book, "Effective VisualAge for Java".
He has a web site at javadude.com/vaj.
